THE OLD HOME PLACE IN THE BEGINNING...
THE BP ARRIVES A TINY ZIPPY UPDATE...
WHAT'S NEXT? HOME

Welcome to the next installment of The ZipMonster's Saga!

As soon as I can, I will continue the more detailed story of how The ZipMonster came together (as well as journaling my continuing adventures with her) but in order to help out some folks that are eager to start on their own swap, I have decided to outline the basics below. Hopefully this will help answer some of your questions, and I will do my best to provide more details for you as soon as I can.

If you have specific questions relating to a BP swap, please post them over at FordFestiva.Com, and I will answer them as best I can.

It's important to know that I had to do a lot of fab/mod to get this to work. Remember this is a Festiva auto trans swap - you may encounter different problems with a manual trans swap.

  • Lowering block (3 1/2"),
  • crank pulley (remove a/c pwr str groove part),
  • pass. side mount,
  • front trans mount,
  • oil pan (removed the whole trans webbing from pan),
  • 1.3 block to trans brackets,
  • 1.8 downpipe bracket,
  • vacuum takeoff for trans,
  • hard vacuum line from trans accumulator (cut to length for fitment),
  • radiator edge (by exhaust shroud),
  • radiator top brackets,
  • radiator fan assembly (had to invert 180 degrees (distributor clearance) and do a lot of trimming on shroud to clear exhaust manifold shroud, water bypass line, and transmission),
  • 1.8 water pump outlet, upper and lower radiator hoses,
  • adjust trans linkage,
  • radiator overflow bottle,
  • lengthen brake booster hose,
  • lengthen rad overflow bottle hose,
  • the whole intake hose, vane, and air box from the throttle body,
  • battery relocation to rear of car,
  • injector harness,
  • running 2 new wires from ECU, lengthening 2 existing wires,
  • changing over idle valve connector,
  • 2 grade 8 bolts, washers, bushings, and nuts for crossmember to block,
  • 1.8 ECU,
  • 1.3 flywheel and starter,
  • exhaust (from the end of the downpipe to the rear),
  • lower sway bar mounts (add washers),
  • remove a/c rec drier (bracket is in the way),
  • 2 fuel lines (1.8 has quick disconnects).

This is about all I can remember for now... Again, if you have any any specific questions, please post them at FordFestiva.Com.

A Zippy little update...

May 5, 2004: I've disassembled the whole setup again, because I was really unhappy with the block setup, because of ground clearance issues. It's important to know that the car ran just fine as it was; I decided to do this to resolve the ground clearance problem for personal reasons, and not for mechanical reasons. I have moved the engine to it's proper location (without the block) and I am currently modifying the rear transmission mount, and the passenger-side engine mount in order to create enough clearance for the intake. I'll be extending the two ears on the rear transmission mount in order to rotate the engine/tranny assembly away from the firewall. I will post more pictures as I can.

I have purchased a turbocharger/intercooler, exhaust manifold and gauge cluster from a Talon to be installed later.
